Yong Eun
(May) Kwon

Yong Eun (May) Kwon (b. 1994 Seoul, Republic of Korea) is an artist currently working in New York. She uses a variety of materials to create her pink half-human half-fish persona ‘Fish Daegari’ (means fish head in Korean), across two-dimensional and three-dimensional spaces. 

Her works humorously express self-portraits of incomplete modern individuals who seek to escape the excessive competition, endless work, complicated thoughts and emotions of their daily lives. She aims to convey humorously, through the juxtaposition of humans and fish, that irrational, emotional, and venting desire of us is not negative or should be hidden but inherently natural. Her works are driven by the desire for all of us to live more authentic lives, to take more time to find happiness, to see that our lives are short and finite, and that beneath our skins, we're all just pink meatballs!

Alcohol often appears in her work. This is reminiscent of the liberation of citizens in the ancient Dionysus Festival. The fish head is a mask worn for the Dionysus Festival in her art world. Through small, fleeting festivals in her works, she seeks to give exhausted modern people a moment of respite.

As a young emerging artist, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in sculpture from Ewha Womans University in Korea and had exhibitions at uJung Art Center (2017), GongSangOnDo Complex Cultural Space (2018), Ewha Art Pavilion (2019), Gallery Emu (2019), etc. She also worked as an art director and stage director for movies and theater plays. In 2022, she participated in Blooming Rainbow, the first project of the Baltimore Changwon sister city partnership. She graduated from SVA MFA program in 2024 and continues to actively create and exhibit her works in New York at LatchKey Gallery (2023), Van Der Plas Gallery (2024), SVA Flatiron Gallery (2024), Stephanie Kim Gallery (2024), etc.

권용은(1994년 서울 출생)은 현재 뉴욕에서 활동하고 있는 작가입니다. 그녀는 다양한 재료를 사용하여 그녀의 반인반어 페르소나인 '휘시대가리'를 그림과 조각에 걸쳐 만듭니다.

그녀의 작업은 끝없이 이어지는 경쟁과 일, 복잡한 생각과 감정에 지친 불완전한 현대인들의 자화상을 유머러스하게 그립니다. 그녀는 인간과 물고기의 모순적인 조합을 통해 그런 현대 사회 속에서 억눌린 비이성적이고 감정적인 욕망이 부정적이거나 숨겨야할 것이 아니라 자연스러운 것임을 유머러스하게 전달하고자 합니다. 그녀의 작업은 우리 모두는 어짜피 피부를 벗기면 핑크색 미트볼 고기덩어리일 뿐이고 그런 짦고 유한한 삶 속에서 보다 진정성있게 삶을 살고 행복을 찾아야한다고 이야기합니다.

그녀의 작업에는 술이 자주 등장합니다. 이는 사람들이 자유로워질 수 있었던 고대 디오니소스 축제를 연상시킵니다. 물고기 머리는 그녀의 작품 세계에서 디오니소스 축제를 위해 작용하는 가면입니다. 그녀는 그녀의 작업 속의 작은 찰나의 축제를 통해 현대인들에게 잠시동안의 휴식을 선사하고자 합니다.

젊은 신진 작가로서 그녀는 한국의 이화여자대학교에서 조소를 전공하여 학사, 석사 학위를 취득하였으며 우정아트센터 (2017), 공상온도 (2018), 이화 아트 파빌리온 (2019), 갤러리 에무 (2019) 등에서 전시를 진행하였습니다. 그녀는 영화와 연극에서 예술감독, 무대감독으로도 활동하였으며 2022년에는 미국 볼티모어와 한국 창원의 첫번째 자매도시 프로젝트인 Blooming Rainbow에 참여하였습니다. 2024년에는 SVA MFA 과정을 졸업하였으며 뉴욕에서 활발한 작업 활동을 하고 있고 LatchKey Gallery (2023), Van Der Plas Gallery (2024), SVA Flatiron Gallery (2024), Stephanie Kim Gallery (2024) 등에서 전시를 진행하였습니다.
